Eyes Wide Shut: A Review of Stanley Kubrick's Final Film

Eyes Wide Shut is a 1999 erotic mystery psychological drama film directed, produced, and co-written by Stanley Kubrick. It is based on the 1926 novella Dream Story by Arthur Schnitzler, transferring the story's setting from early twentieth-century Vienna to 1990s New York City. The plot centers on a doctor (Tom Cruise) who is shocked when his wife (Nicole Kidman) reveals that she had contemplated having an affair a year earlier. He then embarks on a night-long adventure, during which he infiltrates a masked orgy of an unnamed secret society.

This film was Kubrick's last completed work, as he died six days after showing his final cut to Warner Bros. It was also his longest continuous film shoot, lasting for 400 days. The film sparked many controversies and speculations before and after its release, due to its explicit sexual content, secretive production, digital alterations, and delayed premiere. The film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences, but has since gained more appreciation and recognition as one of Kubrick's most complex and provocative films.

In this article, I will provide some background information on the making of Eyes Wide Shut, analyze its themes and symbols, summarize its reception and legacy, and offer some personal opinions and insights on this fascinating film.

Background

Kubrick had been interested in adapting Schnitzler's novella since the 1960s, when he hired writer Jay Cocks to buy the rights for him under a pseudonym. He considered it a perfect text for a film about sexual relations in a modern society. He revived the project in the 1990s, when he hired writer Frederic Raphael to help him with the screenplay. He wanted to cast a real-life married couple in the lead roles, and initially considered Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. He eventually chose Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, who were at the peak of their fame and popularity at the time.

The film was mostly shot in England, apart from some exterior shots of New York City. Kubrick recreated Greenwich Village in meticulous detail at Pinewood Studios, using photographs and measurements taken by his crew. He also used rear-projection plates for some scenes involving taxis or cars. The film had a very long and secretive production process, which lasted from November 1996 to June 1998. Kubrick was notorious for his perfectionism and demanding nature, requiring multiple takes of every scene and constantly changing or improvising dialogue. Cruise and Kidman spent so long living in England that their children acquired English accents.

The film also faced many controversies and rumors before and after its release. Some speculated that Cruise and Kidman's marriage was strained by their involvement in the film, or that they had real sex on camera. Others claimed that Kubrick had exposed a real secret society or b70169992d
